His biggest success so far came in 2012, in his first year with the BMW Bank M3 DTM. He clinched the DTM Drivers‘ title in a dramatic finale in Hockenheim. It was for precisely this reason that the Bavarian manufacturer had secured the services of the experienced Canadian, who had narrowly missed out on the title on four previous occasions. And it proved to be a very wise decision.

Spengler contested his 12th season in the DTM in 2016. It was his fifth for BMW Motorsport and the second for BMW Team MTEK. He claimed six podiums for the team in 2015 and ended the season as the best-placed BMW driver in fifth place in the Drivers‘ Championship. He was not entirely able to backup this success in 2016. He did claim a podium finish in Moscow, but had to settle for 15th in the Drivers‘ Championship at the end of the season. Spengler is determined to put this glitch behind him in 2017, when he lines up for his 13th DTM season.

Before then, Spengler is recharging his batteries at home in Switzerland or in his native Canada. His two main hobbies, which allow him to switch off and escape the stress of motorsport, are golf and biathlon.
